Castelo Branco is a centre of excellence in the production and cultural diffusion. We have selected some of the points of interest in the city:

CONTEMPORARY CULTURAL ART CENTER OF CASTELO BRANCO

The objectives of this cultural centre are promote and disclose the contemporary culture, stimulate the artistic creation and promote the creation and formation of young public. The centre is in a building designed by the Catalonian architect Josep Lluís Mateo, in collaboration with the architect Carlos Reis de Figueiredo. Also, the cultural centre is located in the Campo Mártire da Pátria (Devesa), in the city centre, a meeting place and leisure.   

CARGALEIRO MUSEUM

The Cargaleiro Museum is municipal cultural equipment, protected by the City Council of Castelo Branco, which main objective is the divulgation, studies and conservation of the works that compose the Art Collection of the Manuel Cargaleiro Foundation.

Formed by two old buildings — Solar dos Cavaleiros, a small palace built in the 18th century and a contemporary building —, Cargaleiro Museum is located in the heart of the historic area of the city, near to Praça de Camões, also known as Praça Velha.

FRANCISCO TAVARES PROENÇA JÚNIOR MUSEUM

The museum was founded in 1910 by Francisco Tavares Proença Júnior (1883-1916), a known character in the field of sciences and arts that stood out especially in archaeology.

The original core of the museum is based in an archaeological collection of Francisco Tavares Proença Júnior but after years added works of ancient art from the Bishop Palace. Several works of contemporary art have been added to the collection for years.

THE BISHOP PALACE'S GARDEN

The garden of the Bishop Palace of Castelo Branco is considered one of the most original examples of the baroque style in Portugal; especially because of the statues, the symbolic aspects and the disposition of the elements by themes.

This rectangular baroque garden is presided over by iron balconies and railings and stonework balusters. It presents five lakes, with details on the edges, where water games are installed. In the middle landing of the Staircase of the Kings, there are amazing pumps and water games.
